Why saliva and not blood?
DNA is found in every cell of the body, including the cells of the oral mucosa, which are constantly exposed to saliva. The quality of the genetic material is no different from that obtained from blood. The result of the analysis is the same.
That's why modern DTC genetic tests use saliva: it's convenient, painless, and doesn't require the involvement of medical personnel. The entire process takes place in the comfort of your own home, at a time that's convenient for you.

Preparation: one hour before saliva sample collection
The quality of the sample directly depends on preparation. An hour before collecting saliva, it is necessary toto refrainfrom:

Why is this important? Food, drink, and hygiene residues can get into the sample and reduce sample quality. The laboratory checks the quality of each sample before analysis – and if the sample does not meet the requirements, it will have to be collected again.
One hour of preparation instead of re-assembly is a simple agreement with yourself.

Step-by-step instructions for collecting a saliva sample for DNA analysis
The entire process consists of four steps. It usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on how actively saliva is produced.
Step 1. Preparation
Put on the protective gloves provided. This reduces the risk of contaminating the sample with foreign genetic material from your hands. Then firmly secure the funnel (B) onto the top of the tube (A) – it should sit flat and without gaps.

Step 2. Saliva collection
Hold the tube with the funnel upright. Bring it to your mouth and slowly fill it with saliva until the liquid (not foam) reaches the fill line on the tube.
Two important points: make sure that the liquid, not the foam, gets into the tube, and take your time. If the saliva is produced slowly, that's normal, just wait. The process can take several minutes.

Step 3. Closing the tube
Holding the tube vertically, carefully remove the funnel. Then screw the cap (C) tightly. As you screw it on, the protective seal is broken, allowing the saliva to mix with the buffer solution. This is exactly what should happen.

Step 4. Preparing for shipment
Invert the closed tube 10 times to ensure complete mixing of the saliva with the reagent and stabilize the sample for transport. Then place the tube in the envelope located under the lodgment at the bottom of the box.

Once the saliva sample has arrived at the partner laboratory in the EU, a multi-step process begins:

Frequently asked questions
Can I collect a sample when I have a cold or illness?
It is better to wait until you recover. During illness, the quality of DNA in saliva can decrease due to increased mucus and other impurities. If you have already collected a sample and only then become ill, send it, the laboratory will check the quality.
What if I accidentally ate less than an hour before the appointment?
Wait a little longer and collect the sample after a full hour. There is no need to start over from scratch.
How long does a sample remain viable after collection?
The buffer solution stabilizes the sample for transport. Send it as soon as possible after collection – ideally the same day or the next.
Where can I find an envelope for sending?
The envelope is located under the lodgment (removable stand) at the bottom of the DNA kit box.
