About the test

The Apixmed Prism Respiratory System Health genetic test covers 22 markers across four areas of lung and airway function, including 16 complex markers and 6 individual genetic variants in 6 genes.

What you get from the report

  • A DNA kit for collecting your saliva sample yourself is already included in the price of the test.

  • Genotyping of the sample in an accredited laboratory.

  • A report explaining 22 markers and genetic variants in plain language, with an interpretation of the results:

    • 16 polygenic (complex) traits with an explanation of your individual result and what it means;

    • 6 individual genetic variants with an explanation of their possible biological significance.

  • Context for every marker: genetics is not considered in isolation from lifestyle, age, environment and other factors.

  • Personalized recommendations on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, lifestyle and preventive approaches.

  • The option of a consultation with an Apixmed Prism specialist based on your report results.

  • Pointers to potentially relevant laboratory or clinical parameters that you can discuss with your doctor.

Description

The Respiratory System Health genetic test covers four areas, within which it analyzes 16 complex markers and 6 individual genetic variants in 6 genes: from lung function to lower and upper airway conditions and sleep-related conditions. It assesses how your genetic profile and individual genetic variants are associated with a relatively higher or lower predisposition for each marker compared with a reference population. The test does not measure any marker directly — instead it examines the stable genetic context that complements spirometry and other investigations rather than replacing them.

How the sample is collected

DNA sample collection is done using saliva. You receive the kit by post and collect your own DNA sample into a special tube — it takes just a few minutes and requires no preparation. The sample is then sent for analysis to an accredited laboratory, and you receive your result in digital format.

What the genetic test covers

Complex markers (PRS method)

16 markers across four areas. Assessed using polygenic risk scores: tens and hundreds of variants together shape the contribution to a predisposition, and no single one of them determines the picture on its own.

  • Lung function: forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV₁/FVC ratio, peak expiratory flow

  • Lower airway conditions: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, chronic mucus hypersecretion

  • Upper airways and sinuses: allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, sinus congestion

  • Interstitial, infectious and sleep-related respiratory conditions: pneumonia, obstructive sleep apnea, interstitial lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Individual genetic variants with mechanistic links

6 genetic variants in 6 genes. A mechanistic link to the trait is described for each, so they are interpreted individually and are not included in the complex markers.

  • CHRNA3: associated with nicotine dependence and lung function

  • HHIP and FAM13A: associated with COPD and lung function

  • GSDMB and IL33: associated with asthma

  • MUC5B: an airway mucin whose variant is one of the best-studied associations with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Who the Apixmed Prism Respiratory System Health DNA Test is for

  • Family history of asthma or COPD: specific genetic context for a conversation with a pulmonologist.

  • Smoking or occupational lung risks: additional context for prevention.

  • Chronic nose and sinus symptoms: specific topics for a conversation with an ENT specialist.

  • When choosing supplements: a reason to discuss whether they are appropriate with your doctor, not grounds to change anything on your own.

The Respiratory System Health test is not a diagnosis and does not replace consultation with a doctor.

The results assess probability rather than establishing a predetermined outcome. They are not a diagnosis, do not confirm a disease and do not determine treatment. The test does not replace spirometry, X-rays or other respiratory investigations. Clinical decisions are made by a specialist, taking into account your history, symptoms, diet, age, medication and laboratory data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contact us arrow_outward
How does a genetic lung test differ from spirometry?
Spirometry measures actual lung function here and now, and it is affected by smoking, age, physical activity and current health status. A genetic test does not measure that function: it describes statistical associations between DNA variants and markers established in population studies. Spirometry shows the state of your body right now; a DNA test shows individual features of how it functions and its predispositions, which can help you understand that state better if you read the results of both together rather than each on its own.
How is the sample collected?
You receive the DNA kit by post and collect saliva into a special tube yourself — the procedure takes a few minutes and requires no special preparation or clinic visit. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for genotyping, and you receive the result in digital format.
Does an elevated genetic predisposition to COPD mean I will definitely develop it?
No. The result describes relative genetic predisposition, not a prognosis of disease. The development of COPD is mostly linked to smoking and prolonged exposure to harmful substances, and the genetic context only complements that picture.
How do complex markers differ from individual polymorphisms?
These are two different levels of the report. Complex markers are calculated polygenically: tens and hundreds of variants contribute to a predisposition at once, and the assessment takes the contribution of each into account. Individual polymorphisms with mechanistic links are presented by name, with their own interpretation, and are not included in the complex markers. This is an additional layer for those who want to see specific variants, not grounds for drawing conclusions from any one of them.
How reliable is a genetic lung test?

The reliability of a genetic lung test has two components. The first is the technical accuracy of genotyping, ensured by the laboratory's accreditation within its official scope. The second is the strength of evidence behind the interpretation, and this is not the same for every marker: some associations have been confirmed in large studies, while others so far rest on preliminary data and may require confirmation. The report states the level of evidence for each marker separately.

Can this test diagnose asthma or COPD?
No, the test does not establish diagnoses and does not rule out conditions, including asthma, COPD or pulmonary fibrosis. If you have symptoms, see a pulmonologist: only they can carry out diagnosis and treatment.
What should I do after receiving the genetic lung test report?
Discuss significant results with your doctor or a pulmonologist. Do not change treatment or a supplement regimen based on the genetic report alone.
